How to Calculate CBM for Freight - Complete Guide with Examples
CBM (Cubic Metre) is calculated by multiplying Length × Width × Height (all in metres). For LCL ocean freight, you pay per CBM or per metric ton - whichever is greater (W/M basis). This guide shows you exactly how to calculate CBM for any type of cargo with worked examples.
The CBM Formula
CBM = L (m) × W (m) × H (m)
Measure all dimensions in metres. Multiply all three.
Step-by-step examples
Example 1: Single carton
Dimensions: 120 cm × 90 cm × 80 cm
Calculation: 1.20m × 0.90m × 0.80m = 0.864 CBM
Example 2: 10 identical cartons
Dimensions: 60 cm × 50 cm × 40 cm (×10)
Calculation: 0.60m × 0.50m × 0.40m = 0.12 CBM × 10 = 1.2 CBM total
Example 3: Mixed pallet
Dimensions: 120 cm × 100 cm × 150 cm (whole pallet)
Calculation: 1.20m × 1.00m × 1.50m = 1.8 CBM
W/M: Weight vs Measurement - Which applies?
LCL freight rates are quoted on W/M basis. You pay for whichever is larger: actual weight in metric tons, or volume in CBM.
Rule: Compare W (kg ÷ 1000) vs M (CBM). Use the larger number.
Cargo: 4,000 kg, 3.2 CBM
W = 4,000 ÷ 1,000 = 4.0 MT
M = 3.2 CBM
Chargeable = 4.0 (W wins) → Pay for 4.0 units at the quoted rate
