LCL vs FCL: What's the Difference?
LCL (Less than Container Load) means your cargo shares a container with other shippers and you pay per CBM. FCL (Full Container Load) means you book an entire container exclusively. The choice determines your freight cost, transit time, and handling risk.
| Factor | LCL | FCL |
|---|---|---|
| Minimum cargo size | No minimum (even 0.5 CBM) | Any (you pay for the full container) |
| Cost for small cargo | ✅ Lower | ❌ Higher (paying for unused space) |
| Cost for large cargo | ❌ Higher | ✅ Lower per CBM |
| Transit time | ⚠️ Slower (CFS handling) | ✅ Faster (direct) |
| Cargo security | ⚠️ Mixed with other goods | ✅ Exclusive container |
| Best for | Cargo < 15 CBM | Cargo > 15 CBM |
| CFS handling | ✅ Required | ❌ Not needed |
| Typical charges | Per CBM / W/M | Per container (flat rate) |
How to calculate CBM for LCL?
CBM (Cubic Metre) = Length (m) × Width (m) × Height (m)
Example: A carton measuring 100cm × 80cm × 60cm = 1.0m × 0.8m × 0.6m = 0.48 CBM
For LCL, freight is charged on W/M (Weight or Measurement), whichever gives a higher chargeable weight. Divide actual weight (kg) by 1000 to get W. Compare with M (CBM). Use whichever is larger.
